Preventative Care

Preventative care is an essential part of your pet’s wellness. At Acacia Animal Hospital, we believe it is always better to prevent illness and disease rather than treat it. Content

Examinations

A routine wellness examination is essential to the health and wellness of your pet. They give your animal the best chance at a long and healthy life by enabling your veterinarian to catch illness or disease before it becomes dangerous or uncomfortable. We highly recommend scheduling a routine wellness examination depending on the individual needs of your pet. During a routine check-up, your veterinarian will address any health concerns or problems during their earliest stages. These appointments will also give you the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns regarding your pet’s health.

An annual wellness exam with an Acacia Animal Hospital veterinarian will include a full physical examination. If any issues are detected or your veterinarian feels that there is an area of concern, your pet may be required to undergo further diagnostic testing.

Vaccinations

Keeping vaccinations up to date are as critical to an animal’s health as a human. Fatal or dangerous diseases are often preventative with a proper vaccination routine. At Acacia Animal Hospital, we recommend a series of core and non-core vaccinations based upon your pet’s age, species, breed, and lifestyle. Vaccines should be scheduled and updated annually to keep your pet fully protected.

Core Vaccinations include:

  • For dogs: Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza) and Leptospirosis
  • For cats: Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia)

Non-core vaccinations include:

  • For dogs: Lyme, Canine Influenza, and Bordetella
  • For cats: FeLV (Feline Leukemia)

Parasite Control

Pesky parasites like ticks, fleas, and worms might be small, but if left untreated they can cause big problems for your pet. Often, infestations of parasites can lead to bigger issues such as discomfort and serious illness. Parasites exist naturally in the environment, which is why controlling them regularly is so important for your pet’s health. Parasite prevention for fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites is highly recommended by the veterinarians at Acacia Animal Hospital and vital to the long-term health of your animal.

Microchipping

Unfortunately, no matter how responsible you are as an owner, one in three pets will get lost at some point in their lifetime. Losing an animal can be devastating, which is why it’s critical to give your pet the best chance at finding their way home. Collars with tags can be easily lost or removed, which is why a microchip is the best way to ensure you can be reunited with your pet if they go missing. Implantation of a microchip by a skilled veterinarian is quick, simple, and relatively pain-free. Not to mention, it will stay with your pet for life, sitting just under the skin between the shoulder blades. Register your pet’s microchip in the national pet-finding database, HomeAgain, so that you can easily be reunited with a lost pet.

Nutrition & Weight Management

Just like humans, pets can easily become overweight when not fed the proper diet and given regular exercise. Obesity in animals is becoming increasingly common and can lead to a myriad of different health issues and obesity-related ailments. These can include arthritis, joint pain, diabetes, heart disease, mobility issues, skin issues, and high blood pressure. As a pet owner, you have total control over what your animal eats. That’s why it’s so important that you understand proper pet nutrition and weight-management. At Acacia Animal Hospital, we understand that you want to ensure the longest and highest quality of life for your furry companion. Feeding your pet a nutritionally-dense diet and ensuring they get adequate daily exercise can target both individual dietary requirements and health concerns. If you have questions or concerns regarding nutrition, our friendly staff are always ready to help.
